There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gaming is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is correct of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that contains many amenities on top of the gambling den, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
